Memorial Tree

An oak tree has been planted by the channel almost opposite Rose Cottage, in memory of Major Cyril Gordon who died recently. The planting was attended by members of the Gordon family, and a plaque has been attached.

Farewell to Mike Gallagher

Very sadly Mike Gallagher has resigned from the committee as he and his wife are shortly moving away from Salisbury to be nearer their family. We are very grateful to Mike for all he has done for us. We are delighted to welcome Jan Fitzjohn onto the committee - she has already started to get involved in various ways!

We are also delighted that Brian Dalton (Councillor for Harnham) has agreed to be our ‘Harnham Liaison Officer’, to alert us to any happenings in Harnham he feels we should be aware of.

John Beckett Awarded!

Congratulations to John Beckett on his High Sheriff Award!

Congratulations!

To Trustee Peter Pleydell-Bouverie, who will be the next High Sheriff of Wiltshire. He will serve for one year, starting in May.

We have 2 new cards!

The first is a Greetings Card of superb quality, created for us by one of our Friends, Caroline Waldman. She spent a great many hours getting the detail totally correct, as befits a Member of the Society of Floral Painters. The card shows the Yellow Flag Iris.

The other card is of the Kingfishers so marvellously photographed on the Meadows by Clare Villiers.
We chose the photograph showing young kingfishers being fed – and it also of course is in full colour.

You can view both of them with details on the publications page.

7th May 2007 - Grass Snake Spotted!

A Grass Snake was spotted by Dr Elizabeth Webb, here is what she wrote:

"Glancing out of the window I noticed an unusual ripple working its way from the watermeadow side of the Nadder towards my bank, and as it got nearer I realised it was a 2 - 3ft grass snake.

It had also attracted the attention of a coot, one of the local terrorists of the wildlife population, who approached and began to attack the snake. There ensued a great splashing, hissing and flapping, with the coot pecking at the snake which raised its head offthe water to hiss in return, until finally the snake reached safety and disappeared into a hole in the bank.

There is not often a dull moment on the river."

End March 2007 - Red Kite Spotted!

A Red Kite has been spotted over the Water Meadows. If you spot it please contact us with the details info@salisburywatermeadows.org.uk. A photograph would be fantastic, so get your cameras out.
